I-405 Sepulveda Pass Widening Project

Project Summary

Client: Kiewit Infrastructure West
Project Value: $721 million

This major design-build effort added a 10-mile northbound HOV lane to Interstate 405 between I-10 and US-101. In addition to constructing the lane itself, the project included the realignment of existing on- and off-ramps, reconstruction or modification of 23 bridges and ramps, the construction of 18 miles of retaining walls, and improvements to nearby city streets. One of the most high-profile moments of the project was the demolition of the iconic Mulholland Bridge, which gained national attention as “Carmageddon.” The demolition was completed 17 hours ahead of schedule.

As the I.T. Project Manager, I was responsible for the complete design, deployment, and ongoing support of the network infrastructure across multiple project sites. This included the Integrated Project Office (IPO), three field offices, an equipment yard, legal office, and utility office. At the project’s peak, I supported over 500 users. My responsibilities included imaging, configuring, and maintaining all computers, smartphones, iPads, and related technology used by project staff.

I designed and implemented a centralized networking strategy, deploying routers, Layer 3 switches, and wireless access points to connect all locations. To reduce costs and increase flexibility, I engineered a wireless backhaul solution using Ceragon Networks microwave radios, linking all field sites back to the main IPMO. That central hub also housed the MPLS circuit and served as the project’s core connectivity point. By eliminating recurring ISP charges at satellite offices, this solution saved the project an estimated $250,000.

This project demonstrated my ability to deliver enterprise-grade IT infrastructure in complex environments while driving significant operational savings and keeping a high-profile infrastructure project connected and running efficiently.
